How Online Tutoring Actually Works — A Parent's Walkthrough

Online tutoring doesn't have to be a mystery

If your only experience of tutoring is in-person, online can feel unfamiliar. How does the tutor see the child's work? Does the child actually focus? Is it really as effective as someone in the room? Short answer: yes, for most Australian primary students. Here's exactly how a good online tutoring session works.

Before the first lesson

You book a slot, usually through a simple calendar on the tutoring site. The first lesson is typically free — a diagnostic session where the tutor gets to know your child and identifies starting level. You'll receive an email with the video link (Zoom in our case) and any prep.

What you need at home:

  • A laptop, desktop, or tablet with a camera and microphone
  • Stable broadband internet (any standard NBN or cable plan works fine)
  • A quiet workspace — kitchen table, desk, or bedroom with minimal background noise
  • Pen, paper, and any textbooks or school materials the tutor asks for

No special software beyond Zoom. Most families are fully set up in 10 minutes.

What happens in the lesson

A typical 60-minute TutorExel lesson looks like this:

  1. 0-5 minutes: Warm greeting, check-in, quick recap of last session's homework
  2. 5-15 minutes: New concept introduced. Tutor shares their screen with visuals or whiteboard notes, explains step by step.
  3. 15-35 minutes: Your child works through guided examples. Tutor watches them work in real time using screen share or through showing their written work to the camera.
  4. 35-50 minutes: Independent practice with tutor support. The tutor lets the child attempt problems, intervening only when they get stuck.
  5. 50-60 minutes: Review, homework set for the week, questions answered, parent update if relevant.

How the tutor sees the child's work

Three common methods. The tutor picks whichever suits the task:

  • Shared whiteboard (Zoom or a tool like Jamboard). Both the child and tutor can write on the same digital whiteboard in real time. Great for maths.
  • Webcam on paper. The child works on paper and angles the laptop camera to show it. Works for long calculations or writing.
  • Screen share. The child shares their screen if they're working in a document or on a website. Useful for typing practice or reading passages.

A good tutor uses all three across a lesson depending on the activity. The tools stay invisible once you're used to them.

Does the child actually focus?

This is the most common parent question. The honest answer: most children focus better online 1-on-1 than in a physical group tutoring class. There are no peers to socialise with, the session is shorter than school hours, and the tutor is visible and engaged the whole time. For restless Year 2-3 children, a parent might occasionally sit nearby for the first few sessions; by the third or fourth session most children are independent.

What parents actually do

Minimal. You're not expected to be in the session. Most parents:

  • Help set up the laptop and camera for the first 2-3 sessions
  • Pop their head in at the start or end to say hello to the tutor
  • Help the child remember to do homework between sessions
  • Ask the tutor questions via email or a parent portal if needed

Why it's as effective as in-person

Research consistently finds online 1-on-1 tutoring delivers equivalent learning outcomes to in-person for primary-age students (Year 3 and up). The key variables are tutor quality and session frequency, not format. Plus: online is typically half the price, has zero commute, and gives you access to a national pool of tutors rather than just local options.

TutorExel 1-on-1 online tutoring is $25 per class with a free first session. No setup cost, no commute, live weekly sessions with a qualified Australian tutor.
