| S.No | Topic | What We Cover |
|---|---|---|
Language for interacting: formality & roles | Language choices are explored in relation to social roles, relationships and levels of formality. Differences between formal and informal language are examined through classroom discussion, presentations and peer conversations. Inclusive language and respectful interaction are emphasised, including acknowledging others’ ideas and taking turns. Cultural awareness is introduced by recognising that communication norms can vary across contexts. Students practise adjusting tone and word choice for different audiences.
Text stages: identifying structure in narratives & reports | Texts are examined to identify how structure changes depending on purpose. Narrative texts are analysed for orientation, complication and resolution, while information texts are examined for introduction, grouped facts and conclusion. Examples from short texts are used to locate these stages. Understanding text structure supports both comprehension and writing organisation. Links are made between structure and reader understanding.
Writing: plan & write a short recount (1 paragraph) | Writing focuses on planning and composing a short recount that clearly sequences events. Attention is given to paragraph structure, time connectives and topic vocabulary. Writing follows a clear beginning, middle and end. Editing focuses on sentence boundaries and consistent tense. The final piece demonstrates logical flow and clarity.
Punctuation: quotation marks & dialogue conventions | Dialogue punctuation is explicitly taught, including quotation marks, capital letters, commas and end punctuation. Narrative extracts are used to identify correct dialogue conventions. Short writing tasks provide opportunities to apply punctuation accurately. Common errors are discussed and corrected through guided editing. Apostrophes are briefly previewed to prepare for later learning.
Vocabulary: synonyms, antonyms & shades of meaning | Vocabulary development focuses on identifying synonyms and antonyms to expand word choice. Words are compared to explore subtle differences in meaning. Context is used to determine the most appropriate vocabulary for a sentence. Vocabulary choices are applied in short reading and writing activities. This strengthens precision and clarity in expression.
Complex sentences (intro): dependent clause with subordinators | Complex sentences are introduced by identifying independent and dependent clauses. Subordinating conjunctions such as because, when, if and although are used to link ideas. Sentences are expanded to show cause, time and condition. Differences between simple, compound and complex sentences are reinforced. Grammar knowledge is applied directly to writing tasks.
Multimodal reading: images & composition (framing/salience) | Visual texts are analysed to understand how images communicate meaning. Framing, placement and salience are examined in illustrations and film stills. Discussion focuses on how visual choices influence viewer response. Connections are made between images and written text. Visual literacy skills support comprehension across multimodal texts.
Writing: revise & improve cohesion (sentence openers) | Writing is revised to improve cohesion and flow between sentences. Pronouns, connectives and varied sentence openers are used to link ideas. Repetition is reduced through careful editing. Students examine how sentence beginnings guide the reader. Cohesion is linked to clarity and readability.
Speaking/listening: short informative talk with visuals | Speaking tasks focus on planning and delivering a short informative presentation. Ideas are organised in a clear sequence and supported with visuals. Attention is given to tone, volume and audience awareness. Listening skills include responding to others and giving feedback. Oral communication confidence is developed.
Revision & diagnostic task | Reading, writing and language skills are consolidated through short review tasks. A brief writing sample and reading comprehension activity are completed. Results highlight strengths and areas for improvement. Feedback supports goal setting for the next term. The session prepares students for increased complexity ahead.
